Our Vision is embodied in the candle flame!
CSL White Rock is a welcoming, thriving, dynamic community of spiritual learners, committed to raising consciousness and awakening humanity to love and joy.
There’s a reason why we have a candle burning at our Celebration on Sunday. It represents the consciousness of the community. You may not know but Rev Nolli Hartwell lit my candle at my installation in 2002, thus symbolizing the passing of the light of her leadership to me. I have made a point of having one lit ever since. In my mind the flame says that there is an unbroken transmission of teachers from Dr. Holmes to Dr Barnum to Tom Costa and finally to Rev Nolli who was a classmate of Dr Kenn Gordon CSL’s Community Spiritual Leader. The teaching came to me through Rev. Marilyn and her lineage through her teacher Jim Munson. I’m presently trying to sleuth out who Jim Munson’s teacher was.
This lineage of teachers is important to me because it puts a individual stamp on each community while maintaining the integrity of the teaching itself. So much is embodied in that tiny (now battery powered) flame that is lit every Sunday. Cultures throughout human history have invested meaning in the flame, its ability to warm our bodies, and warn us of danger (think Lord of the Rings); its ability to light our path and roast marshmallows and weenies! The flame in fact can be and often is the symbol for life itself. I always insist one be lit at every memorial I preside at to remind us that even if the light of ones life seems to be gone, it is still burning somewhere.
So choosing to do another celebration with light and choosing to do a series on the light we bring to the world is very significant for me right now. We have a new Vision and a restated Mission as a Centre. We have a set of values that we are exploring, embracing and seeking to demonstrate to the world. There is in my mind only one reason for Centers for Spiritual Living to exist and for Our Centre to exist and that is to be an agent of change in the world. We change the world by how we live our lives.
This series that we begin this Sunday will conclude on Dec 21st , the big turnaround day when the sun again begins its march northward, or more accurately, when the earth tilts on its axis toward the south. At that point the assembled musicians and community will sing “We are the People” and the earth will move and the glory of God WILL shine through
We are the people
God has called us in this hour
to be a shining light,
throughout the darkest night.
We are the people
and the way we make a change is always
by the way we live our lives
We are the people of the Light
