The Hero Within
I began teaching the Hero Journey for the first time in 1990. I had just purchased 2.5 acres on Reid Island and had set up camp there for the summer. I would spend that summer living in a tent with my cat, my solar powered laptop and a stack of books on the Hero. The PBS Interview with Joseph Campbell had burst on the scene just a couple of years before in 1988 and I was looking for a way to make Religious Studies, or more significantly Religion 12, relevant for a bunch of 17-year-old boys.
The idea that spirituality or the search for God could in any way be heroic had never occurred to them. To be honest it had never occurred to any of my colleagues, nor as it turned out to the Roman Catholic hierarchy in Vancouver. My programme was discontinued in 1997.
