The Hero Within


I began teaching the Hero Journey for the first time in 1990. I had just purchased 2.5 acres on Reid Island and had set up camp there for the summer. I would spend that summer living in a tent with my cat, my solar powered laptop and a stack of books on the Hero. The PBS Interview with Joseph Campbell had burst on the scene just a couple of years before in 1988 and I was looking for a way to make Religious Studies, or more significantly Religion 12, relevant for a bunch of 17-year-old boys. The idea that spirituality or the search for God could in any way be heroic had never occurred to them.
